Certified nurse assistants provide basic services to the patients who are incapable of performing them on their own. These include bathing, feeding, dressing and moving the patient. CNAs who wish to relocate to New Jersey must apply to transfer their certificates there also. This process, regarded as an application for a reciprocal license, may take a few months to complete.

Contact the CNA registry in your state and ask for an endorsement. This document is a declaration that you have completed a CNA training program that is equivalent to a training program in New Jersey. You may have to pay a fee for this service.

Call Pearson Vue and ask to apply for reciprocity. Pearson Vue is the company responsible for administering CNA exams in New Jersey. It also handles reciprocal certification on behalf of the Department of State. Contact Pearson Vue at 1-800-274-5984 or 1-610-617-9300 Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The company will send you an application package.

Complete a Criminal Background Investigation (CBI) form. You will find this form in the application package from Pearson Vue. Visit a law enforcement office to have your fingerprints taken and take this form with you. Mail the yellow copy of the CBI form to the address on the application. Keep the blue copy for your records and give the pink copy to your employer.

Complete the application for reciprocity. Mail the application, along with any other supporting documents and a money order or cashier's check for the application fee, to the address provided on the form.

Wait for a decision on your application. If the New Jersey Department of Health approves it, you will receive your New Jersey CNA certificate in the mail. Note that the processing time depends on the background investigation. It takes about 12 weeks for the Department to receive the results.
