Wyndham includes some of the oldest and most-recognized hospitality brands in the world today, from the distinctive Wyndham Grand George Washington Hotel in Virginia to the Travelodge in Bakersfield, California. Most carry the company's name with "by Wyndham" tagged on the end.
Tip
Wyndham and its family of hotel brands are owned by Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, Inc., a publicly traded corporation.
The Wyndham Hotel Corporation began in Dallas, Texas in 1981. After a long history of mergers and buyouts, it has become one of the largest hotel companies in the world, with about 8,100 hotels in 153 countries worldwide. While the brands have different names and vary in the services they offer, each of them are included in the Wyndham Rewards loyalty program.
In 2017, Wyndham Worldwide (NYSE: WYN) announced its plans to spin off the company’s hotel business into a separate company, the Wyndham Hotel Group. In 2018, the Wyndham Hotel Group history culminated with the establishment of the publicly traded Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, Inc., more simply known as Wyndham Hotels (NYSE: WH).
In 2020, Wyndham Hotels has 19 brands that are organized into six categories:
- Distinctive: Wyndham Grand
- Upscale: Wyndham, Dolce Hotels and Resorts
- Lifestyle: TRYP, Esplendor Boutique Hotels, Dazzler, Trademark
- Midscale: La Quinta, Wingate, Wyndham Garden, AmericInn, Ramada, Baymont
- Economy: Microtel, Days Inn, Super 8, Howard Johnson, Travelodge
- Extended Stay: Hawthorn Suites
Wyndham Grand is the company's highest luxury brand. It has more than 40 hotels in resorts and cities across the world. Twenty of these are in Asia, while eight are in Europe. In the United States, its properties include the Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach in Florida and the Hotel Galvez in Texas.
The Wyndham Hotels & Resorts properties are in the company's upscale category. They are located in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Turkey, Germany and the Caribbean. American examples include the Wyndham Lake Buena Vista in Disney World and the Wyndham San Antonio Riverwalk.
Dolce was acquired by Wyndham in 2015 and is a brand that targets upscale business travelers. Most of these properties have golf courses and spas, and some are located on historical properties, such as the Dolce Hayes Mansion in San Jose and the Cheyenne Mountain Resort in Colorado.
Targeting both business travelers and families, Wyndham's mid-priced chains, or midscale hotels, include Wingate by Wyndham and Wyndham Garden. These hotels offer such must-haves as free Wi-Fi and free breakfasts, and many include indoor pools and fitness centers.
Wyndham Worldwide acquired the Spanish hotel chain TRYP in 2010. Recognized today as TRYP by Wyndham, these are located in popular tourist cities like Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, New York and Montreal. Similarly, the Trademark hotels are primarily located in Europe.
The Esplendor Hotels include 15 properties in Europe and Latin America, with one hotel in Miami. There are 14 Dazzler Hotels in Latin America, with one hotel in Brooklyn. Ramada may be one of the company's most-recognized brands, with over 800 of these midscale hotels located in 63 countries. Baymont Inn & Suites and AmericInn hotels are primarily in the U.S.
Wyndham owns several economy hotel chains that most Americans will easily recognize, such as Days Inn, Super 8, Travelodge, Howard Johnson and Microtel. Not only are these chains abundant in the U.S., with a presence in just about every city and town in the country, but they can be found throughout Canada, China and Europe. Most offer free Wi-Fi and complimentary breakfasts, but their greatest appeal is a budget-friendly price for clean and comfortable rooms.
Wyndham's extended category includes only one chain, Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham. These extended-stay hotels are primarily marketed to families. They feature one- and two-bedroom suites that come with full kitchens. Most Hawthorn Suites include amenities like swimming pools, exercise facilities and buffet breakfasts that come included in the price of the suite.
